In recent years, legal cases involving sexual abuse have skyrocketed. Many of the predators committing these crimes are respected members of their denominations and places of worship, which allows them to easily gain the trust of families and community members. To compound the problem, the organizations they are associated with often protect the predators with lies, denials, and cover-ups.
Any institution which turns a blind eye to this horrific behavior needs to be held accountable for the severe trauma they have caused.
Churches and Dioceses
The Southern Baptist Church
The S.B.C., which is the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., has had more than 700 victims come forward to report abuse over the course of 20 years. And in May of 2022, church leaders published a review that said top church officials were suppressing reports of sexual abuse for more than two decades.
The Mormon Church
In August of 2022 the Associated Press reported that the Mormon Church's internal Abuse Help Line was being "misused" by their leaders to shield church leaders from sexual abuse accusations and prevent the reports from reaching law enforcement. In one instance, an Arizona church member called the help line to report that a member of his ward had been sexually assaulting his 5-year old daughter. Despite this call, the abuse continued for another seven years.
If you were sexually abused by a clergy member of any religious institution (not related to you), file a confidential claim request above or contact us today to discuss your legal options.
Since as early as the 1980s, there have been a shocking amount of sexual abuse allegations and convictions against individuals who hold leadership roles in various religious institutions including the Roman Catholic Church, The Southern Baptist Church, and the Mormon Church (also known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or LDS), and many others.
The Catholic Church
A ProPublica database lists 6,770 Catholic clergymen as “credibly accused” of sexual misconduct as of January 28, 2020. And a report by the church itself said more than 4,000 Catholic priests in the United States have faced sexual abuse allegations. These cases involved more than 10,000 children.
